Satisfyingly healthy road trip snacks

Traveling is awesome, being hungry is not. If you're planning on taking a road trip anytime soon, it's always a good idea to put some thought into your food (if you're on a diet or a healthy-eater, this is especially the case). Resorting to potato chips and chocolate doesn't have to happen. It really doesn't. Here are some of the best road trip foods out there that not only are healthy and taste good, but are perfect for the road.

Hard-boiled eggs: Instant protein with a built-in wrapper, you can't go wrong with hard-boiled eggs for a satisfying and healthy road trip food. Bring a few or a dozen - hard-boiled eggs (as long as they're kept in a cooler) will last for about a week. They're great cold (with a little bit of salt and pepper) and will keep you full for a few hours.

PB & J sandwiches: You may think this is just for kids, but peanut butter and jelly sandwiches make an excellent healthy road trip food. The peanut butter gives you protein, and the bread and jelly of course are decent carbs. They also last for awhile (about a week as well) and as long as they're stored in a cool place, they don't need to be refrigerated, making them quite convenient to bring. Choose some healthy, whole-grain bread, and you'll get even more nutritional value.

Trail mix: Another great way to get protein and feel full quickly is by bringing a bag of trail mix along for the ride, or any other kind of nuts for that matter. Try making a mix you can't put down by using your favorite type of dried fruits, nuts and any other things you love (pretzels, dark chocolate, etc). Sunflower seeds and almonds can be an excellent choice of nuts to add for their vitamins and minerals.
String cheese: If you love cheese, one of the best things you can bring along to still get your cheese fix is string cheese. This of course will need to be refrigerated, but if you buy it in a big block or single size, it will always stay quite well in a cooler.  Get vitamin D and calcium each day easily with this tasty and wholesome food.

Granola bars: Similar to trail mix, granola bars are another great food for the road because they give you quick energy and keep you full for decent amount of time. It's also fun to make homemade granola bars, which are surprisingly easy to do. And it doesn't get much more travel-friendly.

Jerky: Whether you like beef jerky, or you're trying to keep it light with turkey jerky, jerky in any form is one of the best road trip foods. It is of course instant protein, which helps you stay full, and jerky doesn't need to be stored in a cooler - therefore freeing up space in your cooler for other things, such as dairy items and drinks.

Bananas & grapes: It's always good to bring fruit along too, but not all fruit was made for the road. Bananas and grapes, however, are great for it. Bananas have a built-in wrapper, and since they have potassium, they're a great food source to keep you healthy while you're cooped up in the car all day. Grapes, too, are great to bring because they can be separated easily to whichever bunch size you need.

Baby carrots: As for veggies , you can't go wrong with a bag of baby carrots for your road trip food arsenal. They contain vitamin C and of course beta carotene - all which help keep your immune system in check, which is vital when you're traveling.

It's common for people to get sick while on the road, and a large part of this is because the food they're eating is just not that healthy. Don't let this happen to you. When you're on the road, you can be in control of what you eat. It may take a little planning, but your stomach (and body) will thank you later.
